Ophthalmosaurus

This pattern uses a 2 mm hook and 4 ply wool. The pattern is written in American crochet notation.

The finished ophthalmosaurus is 13 cm long.

Snout

Round 1: 4 sc in a magic ring (4 stitches)

Rounds 2 – 5: sc in each stitch (4 stitches) (4 rounds)

 

Head

Round 6: increase, sc, increase, sc (6 stitches)

Round 7: increase in the first two stitches, sc, increase in the next two stitches, sc in the last stitch (10 stitches)

Round 8: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next three stitches, sc in the next two stitches, increase in the next three stitches, sc in the last stitch (16 stitches)

Rounds 9 – 10: sc in each stitch (16 stitches) (2 rounds)

Round 11: (decrease the next two stitches together) x 2, 4 sc, (decrease the next two stitches together) x 2, 4 sc (12 stitches)

 

Body

The increases and decreases are at the top and bottom of the body. If necessary, adjust to make sure that is the case.

Round 12: increase in the first two stitches, sc 4, increase in the next 2 stitches, sc 4 (16 stitches)

Round 13: increase in the first 4 stitches, sc 4, increase in the next 4 stitches, sc in the last 4 stitches (24 stitches)

Round 38: sc 2 (or as many as you need to make sure you are at the bottom or top of the tail), chain 8, join to the next stitch

Rounds 40 – 41: sc in each stitch (8 stitches) (2 rounds)

Round 42: sc 2, decrease the next two stitches together, sc 2, decrease the last two stitches together (6 stitches)

Rounds 43 – 44: sc around (6 stitches) (2 rounds)

Round: decrease around

Fasten off, weave in end.

Attach wool to the other end of the tail and repeat to make the other half of the tail fin.

Sew the tail together.

Dorsal fin

Round 1: 4 sc in a magic circle (4 stitches)

Round 2: increase in the first two stitches, sc in the next two stitches (6 stitches)

Round 3: increase in the first two stitches, sc in the next four stitches (8 stitches)

Round 4: increase in the first two stitches, sc in the next six stitches (10 stitches)

Round 5: sc in the first two stitches, increase in the next two stitches, sc in the last six stitches (12 stitches)

Round 6: sc in each stitch (12 stitches)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
