This pattern is written in American crochet notation.

Head

Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6 stitches)

Round 2: increase in each sc (12 stitches)

Round 3: sc, increase – repeat (18 stitches)

Round 4: 2 sc, increase – repeat (24 stitches)

Round 5: 3 sc, increase – repeat (30 stitches)

Round 6: 4 sc, increase – repeat (36 stitches)

Rounds 7 – 21: sc in each sc

Round 22: 3 sc, decrease – repeat (ugh, the maths, it hurts my brain L)

Round 23: 2 sc, decrease – repeat

Round 24: sc, decrease – repeat

Stuff the head of the gavel

Round 25: decrease until the hole is closed. Fasten off and weave in the end.

Handle

Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6 stitches)

Round 2: increase in each sc (12 stitches)

Round 3: sc in each sc (12 stitches)

Round 4: sc, increase – repeat (18 stitches)

Rounds 5 – 7: sc in each sc (18 stitches)

Round 8: sc, decrease – repeat (12 stitches)

Rounds 9 – 10: sc around (12 stitches)

Round 11: sc, decrease – repeat (8 stitches)

Rounds 12 – 14: sc in each sc (8 stitches)

Round 15: sc, increase – repeat (12 stitches)

Rounds 16 – 18: sc in each sc (12 stitches)

Round 19: sc, increase around (18 stitches)

Rounds 20 – 21: sc in each sc (18 stitches)

Round 22: sc, decrease around (12 stitches)

Rounds 23 – 25: sc in each sc (12 stitches)

Round 26: sc, decrease around (8 stitches)

Rounds 27 – 29: sc in each sc (8 stitches)

Fasten off leaving long tail. Stuff the tip and then insert a pen or something else stiff into the end of the handle with the top protruding (this is stop the handle drooping in a most ungavellike manner). Stuff around the pen.

Assembly

Stab the protruding end of the pen into the side of the head of the gavel. Use the long tail to sew the handle to the head.

Round 11: 5 sc, decrease – repeat (36 stitches)

Round 12: 4 sc, decrease – repeat (30 stitches)

Stuff the base

Round 16: decrease until the hole is closed. Fasten off. Weave in end.
