Cassowary

This fearsome rainforest creature is made with brown, black, blue and red 8 ply wool and a 4 mm hook. It is 22 cm tall. The pattern is written in American crochet notation.

Head

With black wool

Round 1: 6sc in a magic ring (6 stitches)

Round 2: sc in each stitch (6 stitches)

Round 3: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next stitch – repeat (9 stitches)

Round 4: sc in each stitch (9 stitches)

With blue wool

Round 5: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next stitch – repeat (12 stitches)

Round 6: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next stitch – repeat (18 stitches)

Rounds 7 – 10: sc in each stitch (18 stitches)

 

Neck

Round 11: sc in the first 6 stitches, (decrease two sc together) x 3, sc in the last 6 stitches (15 stitches)

Round 12: (decrease two sc together) x 5, increase in the next 5 stitches (15 stitches)

Round 13: sc in each stitch (15 stitches)

Round 14: (decrease two sc together) x 5, increase in the next 5 stitches (15 stitches)

Round 15: sc in each stitch (15 stitches)

Round 16: (decrease two sc together) x 5, increase in the next 5 stitches (15 stitches)

Round 17: sc in each stitch (15 stitches)

Round 21: increase in the first 3 stitches, sc in the next 12 stitches (18 stitches)

Round 22: sc in the first 2 stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (24 stitches)

Round 23: sc in the first 3 stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (30 stitches)

Round 24: sc in the first 4 stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (36 stitches)

Round 25: sc in the first 5 stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (42 stitches)

Rounds 26 – 32: sc in each stitch (42 stitches)

Round 33: sc in the first 5 stitches, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (36 stitches)

Round 34: sc in the first 4 stitches, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (30 stitches)

Round 35: sc in each stitch (30 stitches)

Round 36: sc in the first 3 stitches, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (24 stitches)

Stuff

Round 39: sc in the first stitch, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (12 stitches)

Round 40: decrease until the hole closes.

Legs (make two)

With brown wool

Make three toes per leg. The toes are made thus:

Round 1: 4sc in a magic ring (4 stitches)

Rounds 2 – 3: sc in each stitch (4 stitches)

Once you have three then:

Round 4: 2sc on the first toe, 2sc on the second toe, 4 sc on the third toe, 2 sc on the other side of the second toe and 2 sc on the other side of the first toe (12 stitches)

Round 5: sc in each stitch (12 stitches)

Round 6: 2sc, (decrease two stitches together) x 3, 4 sc (9 stitches) (make sure that you are decreasing across the broad part of the foot)

Round 7: sc, (decrease two stitches together) x 3, 2sc (6 stitches)

Rounds 8 – 15: sc in each stitch (6 stitches)

With black wool

Round 16: increase in every stitch (12 stitches)

Slip stitch, fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing, stuff.

 

Crest

With brown wool

Chain 4

Round 1: (backloops only) 2sc, increase in stitch at the end of the chain, then turning so that you are crocheting along the other side of the chain in the remaining loop of each stitch 2 sc (6 stitches)

Round 2: increase in the first stitch, sc in the next two stitches, increase in the next stitch, sc in the last two stitches (8 stitches)

Round 3: increase in the first stitch, sc in the next three stitches, increase in the next stitch, sc in the next three stitches (10 stitches)

Round 4: increase in the first stitch, sc in the next four stitches, increase in the next stitch, sc in the next four stitches (12 stitches)

Round 5: sc in each stitch (12 stitches)

Slip stitch, fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

 

Dangly neck thingies (make two)

With red wool

Row 1: chain 7

Row 2: sc along the chain (with one turning chain) (6 stitches)

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

 

Neck marking

With red wool

Row 1: chain 13

Row 2: sc 6, chain 5, sc 4 back down this new chain, sc 6 along the original chain

Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

 

Assembly

Sew the legs to the body, the crest and googly eyes to the head and the dangly neck thingies and neck marking to the neck.
