Dippy the Dimetrodon

This pattern is written in American crochet notation. It uses 4 ply wool and a 2 mm hook.

The finished dimetrodon is 14 cm long.

Head

Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6 stitches)

Round 2: increase in each stitch (12 stitches)

Rounds 3 – 6: sc in each stitch (12 stitches) (4 rounds)

 

Neck

Round 7: sc in the first stitch, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (8 stitches)

Round 8: decrease the first two stitches together, decrease the next two stitches together, sc in the next stitch, increase, increase, sc (8 stitches)

Rounds 9 – 10: decrease the first two stitches together, sc, increase, increase, sc, decrease the last two stitches together (8 stitches) (2 rounds)

 

Body

Round 11: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next stitch – repeat (12 stitches)

Round 12: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next stitch – repeat (18 stitches)

Round 13: sc in the first two stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (24 stitches)

Rounds 14 – 23: sc in each stitch (24 stitches) (10 rounds)

 

Tail

Round 24: sc in the first two stitches, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (18 stitches)

Rounds 25 – 26: sc in each stitch (18 stitches) (2 rounds)

Round 27: sc in the first stitch, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (12 stitches)

Rounds 28 – 30: sc in each stitch (12 stitches) (3 rounds)

Stuff the body

Round 31: sc in the first stitch, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (8 stitches)

Rounds 32 – 36: sc in each stitch (8 stitches) (5 rounds)

Round 37: decrease the first two stitches together, sc 2, decrease the next two stitches together, sc 2 (6 stitches)

Round 38 – 41: sc in each stitch (6 stitches) (4 rounds)

Stuff the tail

Round 42: decrease until the hole closes. Fasten off, weave in the end.

The sail

Row 1: join the wool to the middle of the back at the start of the tail, sc 15 along the back until you reach the neck

Row 2: sc in each stitch (15 stitches)

Row 3: decrease the first two stitches together, sc in the next 11 stitches, decrease the last two stitches together (13 stitches)

Row 4: sc in each stitch (13 stitches)

Row 5: decrease the first two stitches together, sc in the next 9 stitches, decrease the last two stitches together (11 stitches)

Row 6: sc in each stitch (11 stitches)

Row 7: decrease the first two stitches together, sc in the next 7 stitches, decrease the last two stitches together (9 stitches)

Row 8: sc in each stitch (9 stitches)

Row 9: decrease the first two stitches together, sc in the next 5 stitches, decrease the last two stitches together (7 stitches)

Row 10: (decrease two stitches together) x 2, sc, decrease the last two stitches together (4 stitches)

Row 11: (decrease two stitches together) x 2 (2 stitches)

Fasten off

Join the wool at the back end of the sail and sc along the edge, covering over the loose ends of wool as you go. Fasten off and weave in the end once you get to the front end of the sail.

Right legs

Foot

Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6 stitches)

Round 2: sc in each stitch (6 stitches)

Shin

Chain 6, join the chain to the stitch behind where the chain starts to form a ring

Sc around the ring (7 stitches) (4 rounds)

Thigh

Chain 7, join the chain to the stitch behind where the chain starts to form a ring

Sc around the ring (8 stitches) (3 rounds)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

For each of the two holes in the leg, join the wool and decrease around until the hole closes. Then fasten off and weave in the end.

For the toes, attach the wool at the end of the foot, chain two, slip stitch 1 back along the chain, repeat for the other two toes, fasten off, weave in end.

Stuff the leg.

Left legs
