Some friends bought a Harry Potter advent calendar for work. Each day in December they would open a door and find a new Harry Potter figurine. They wanted to continue enjoying it in the new year so I suggested that I make new figures to go behind the doors. So I kinda signed myself up to design 24 Harry Potter figurines :/ We’ll see how we go.
This patterns uses a 2mm hook and 4 ply wool. It is written in American crochet notation.
Beak
With grey 4 ply wool
Round 1: 4 sc in a magic ring (4 stitches)
Round 2: sc in each stitch (4 stitches)
Head
Round 3: increase around (8 stitches) (back loops only)
Round 4: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next stitch – repeat (12 stitches)
Round 5: sc in each stitch (12 stitches)
Round 6: sc in the first stitch, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (8 stitches)
Neck
Round 7: increase in the first two stitches, sc, (decrease two stitches together) x 2, sc (8 stitches)
Rounds 8 – 9: sc, increase in the first two stitches, sc, (decrease two stitches together) x 2 (8 stitches) (2 rounds)
Round 10: 2 sc, increase in the first two stitches, (decrease two stitches together) x 2 (8 stitches)
Body
Round 11: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next stitch – repeat (12 stitches)
Stuff the head
Round 12: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next stitch – repeat (18 stitches)
Round 13: sc in the first two stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (24 stitches)
Rounds 14 – 16: sc in each stitch (24 stitches) (3 rounds)
Switch to brown wool
Rounds 17 – 21: sc in each stitch (24 stitches) (5 rounds)
Round 22: sc in the first two stitches, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (18 stitches)
Round 23: sc in the first stitch, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (12 stitches)
Stuff the body
Round 24: decrease until the hole closes.
Fasten off, weave in ends.
Front legs (make two)
With grey 4 ply wool
Round 1: 4 sc in a magic ring (4 stitches)
Rounds 2 – 6: sc in each stitch (4 stitches) (5 rounds)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
We now need to make 3 claws. For each claw, attach the wool to the base of the leg, chain 3, turn, sc 2 along the chain back to the leg, fasten off and weave in the ends.
Back legs (make two)
With black 4 ply wool
Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6 stitches)
Switch to brown wool
Rounds 2 – 7: sc in each stitch (6 stitches) (6 rounds)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Sew the legs onto the body.
Wings (make two)
With grey 4 ply wool
Big feather
Round 1: 4 sc in a magic ring (4 stitches)
Rounds 2 – 7: sc in each stitch (4 stitches) (6 rounds)
Fasten off, weave in ends.
Medium feather
Round 1: 4 sc in a magic ring (4 stitches)
Rounds 2 – 5: sc in each stitch (4 stitches) (4 rounds)
Fasten off, weave in ends.
Small feather
Round 1: 4 sc in a magic ring (4 stitches)
Rounds 2 – 3: sc in each stitch (4 stitches) (2 rounds)
Don’t fasten off
Now to join the feathers for the wing
Round 1: sc 2 on the small feather, sc two on the medium feather, sc 4 on the big feather, sc 2 on the medium feather, sc 2 on the small feather (12 stitches)
Round 2: sc around (12 stitches)
Round 3: sc 6, (decrease the next two stitches together) x 2, sc 2 (10 stitches) – make sure the decreases are at the top of the wing, on the big feather
Round 4: sc 6, (decrease the next two stitches together) x 2 (8 stitches) – make sure the decreases are at the top of the wing, on the big feather
Round 5: decrease the next two stitches together, sc 4, decrease the next two stitches together (6 stitches) – make sure the decreases are at the top of the wing, on the big feather
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
Tail
Sew on pieces of brown wool for the tail.
Face
Embroider the eyes and embroider around the beak in black.
