Bilby

This adorable little marsupial is 20 cm long and 15 cm tall. It is made using grey, black, white and pink 8ply wool and a 4 mm hook. The pattern is in American crochet notation.

Head

(nose)

With pink

Round 1: 6sc in a magic ring (6 stitches)

Rounds 2 – 3: sc in each stitch (6 stitches)

(head proper)

With grey

Round 4: increase in every stitch (12 stitches)

Round 5: sc in each stitch (12 stitches)

Round 6: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next stitch – repeat (18 stitches)

Round 7: sc in each stitch (18 stitches)

Round 8: sc in the first two stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (24 stitches)

Rounds 9 – 12: sc in each stitch (24 stitches)

Round 13: sc in the first two stitches, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (18 stitches)

Round 14: sc in the first stitch, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (12 stitches)

Stuff

Round 15: decrease until the hole closes.

Fasten off, weave in end.

 

Eyes (make two)

With black

Round 1: 6sc in a magic ring (6 stitches)

Slip stitch, fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

 

Ears (make two)

With pink

Starting from the bottom

Row 1: chain 6

Row 2: sc along the chain (with one turning chain) (5 stitches)

Rows 3 – 7: sc in each stitch (5 stitches)

Row 8: decrease the first two stitches together, sc in the third stitch, decrease the last two stitches together (3 stitches)

Row 9: sc in each stitch (3 stitches)

Row 10: decrease the remaining three stitches together

Fasten off, weave in ends.

 

Body

With grey

Starting at the bottom 🙂

Round 1: 6sc in a magic ring (6 stitches)

Round 2: increase in every stitch (12 stitches)

Round 3: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next stitch – repeat (18 stitches)

Round 4: sc in the first two stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (24 stitches)

Round 5: sc in the first three stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (30 stitches)

Rounds 6 – 15: sc in each stitch (30 stitches)

Round 16: sc in the first three stitches, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (24 stitches)

Round 17: sc in the first two stitches, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (18 stitches)

Round 18: sc in each stitch (18 stitches)

Round 19: sc in the first stitch, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (12 stitches)

Stuff

Round 32: decrease until the hole closes.

Row 12: decrease the first two stitches together, sc in the next 6 stitches, decrease the last two stitches together (8 stitches)

Legs (make two)

Starting from the toes

Round 1: 6sc in a magic ring (6 stitches)

Rounds 2 – 9: sc in each stitch (6 stitches)

Stuff

Round 10: decrease the first and second stitches together, decrease the third and fourth stitches together, increase in each of the fifth and sixth stitches (6 stitches)

Round 11: sc in each stitch (6 stitches)

Change to white

Round 12: sc in each stitch (6 stitches)

Round 13: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next stitch – repeat (9 stitches)

Round 14: sc in each stitch (9 stitches)

Stuff

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

 

Assembly

Sew the eyes and ears to the head. Make sure to fold the ears together at the bottom so that they curve inwards. Sew the tummy fur to the body and sew the arms and legs to the tummy fur. Sew the tail and head to the body. I find it very helpful to just pin everything together so I can make sure it looks right before I start sewing.
