Koala puppet

I designed this for my niece’s first birthday 🙂

It is made using 8ply wool and a 4mm hook. The pattern is written in American crochet notation.

Head

With grey wool

Round 1: 6sc in a magic ring (6 stitches)

Round 2: increase in every stitch (12 stitches)

Round 3: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next stitch – repeat (18 stitches)

Round 4: sc in the first two stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (24 stitches)

Round 5: sc in the first three stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (30 stitches)

Round 6: sc in the first four stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (36 stitches)

Round 7: sc in the first five stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (42 stitches)

Rounds 8 – 14: sc in each sc (42 stitches)

Round 15: sc in the first five stitches, decrease in the next two stitches – repeat (36 stitches)

Round 16: sc in the first four stitches, decrease in the next two stitches – repeat (30 stitches)

Round 17: sc in the first three stitches, decrease in the next two stitches – repeat (24 stitches)

Round 18: sc in the first two stitches, decrease in the next two stitches – repeat (18 stitches)

Neck

Rounds 19 – 20: sc in each sc (18 stitches)

Body

Round 21: sc in the first two stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (24 stitches)

Round 22: sc in the first three stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (30 stitches)

Round 23: sc in the first four stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (36 stitches)

Round 24: sc in the first five stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (42 stitches)

Round 25: sc in the first six stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (48 stitches)

Armholes

We will now start working in rows

Row 26: turn, chain 1, sc in the next 16 stitches, turn (16 stitches)

Rows 27 – 31: chain 1, sc in each stitch, turn (16 stitches)

Fasten off

Now, count 8 stitches from the edge of the sc row. Sc in the 9th stitch and the following 15 stitches, turn. (16 stitches)

Chain 1, sc in each stitch, turn (16 stitches) – do this for five rows

(by doing this you will have formed two flaps, one at the front and one at the back, separated by gaps of 8 stitches)

Chain 8 to bridge the gap between one flap and the other, sc in the 16 stitches of the flap, chain 8 to bridge the gap, sc in the 16 stitches of the other flap (32 sc stitches and 16 chain stitches)

Tummy

Rounds 32 – 41: sc in each stitch around (48 stitches).

Fasten off. Weave in end.

Arms (make two)

With grey wool

Round 1: 6sc in a magic ring (6 stitches)

Round 2: increase in every stitch (12 stitches)

Round 3: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next stitch – repeat (18 stitches)

Rounds 4 – 13: sc in each stitch (18 stitches)

Round 14: sc in the first two stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (24 stitches)

Round 15: sc in each stitch (24 stitches).

Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.

Ears (make two)

With grey wool

Round 1: 6sc in a magic ring (6 stitches)

Round 2: turn, chain 1, increase in each sc (12 stitches)

Round 3: turn, chain 1, sc in the first two stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (16 stitches)

Round 4: turn, chain 1, sc in the first 4 stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (19 stitches)

Round 5: turn, chain 1, sc in the first 7 stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (21 stitches).

Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.

Eyes (make two)

With black wool

Round 1: 6sc in a magic ring (6 stitches)

Round 2: increase in every stitch (12 stitches)

Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.

Nose

With black wool

Chain 6, sc in the first 4 chains, increase in the last chain. Now we start to work in the remaining loops on the other side of the chain. Sc in the first four chains. Increase in the next stitch. Sc in the next four stitches. Increase in the next stitch. Sc in the next 4 stitches. Slip stitch. Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.

Tummy fur

With white wool

Chain 16

Rows 1 – 15: sc in each stitch (15 stitches)

Row 16: decrease in the first two stitches, sc in the next 11 stitches, decrease in the last two stitches (13 stitches)

Rows 17 – 18: sc in each stitch (13 stitches)

Row 19: decrease in the first two stitches, sc in the next 9 stitches, decrease in the last two stitches (11 stitches)

Row 20: decrease in the first two stitches, sc in the next 7 stitches, decrease in the last two stitches (9 stitches)

Fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.

Assembly

Sew the arms to the body and the tummy fur to the tummy. Sew the ears to the side of the head and sew on the eyes and nose. Embroider the mouth.
