Ammonite

This pattern uses a 2 mm hook and 4 ply wool. The finished ammonite is 7 cm long. The pattern is written in American crochet notation.

 

Shell

Round 1: 4 sc in a magic ring (4 stitches)

Rounds 2 – 8: sc in each stitch (4 stitches) (7 rounds)

Round 9: increase in the first stitch, sc in the next stitch, increase in the next stitch, sc in the last stitch (6 stitches)

Rounds 10 – 16: sc in each stitch (6 stitches) (7 rounds)

Stuff as you go

Round 17: sc in the first two stitches, increase – repeat (8 stitches)

Rounds 18 – 24: sc in each stitch (8 stitches) (7 rounds)

Round 25: sc in the first three stitches, increase – repeat (10 stitches)

Rounds 26 – 32: sc in each stitch (10 stitches) (7 rounds)

Round 33: sc in the first four stitches, increase – repeat (12 stitches)

Rounds 34 – 40: sc in each stitch (12 stitches) (7 rounds)

Round 41: sc in the first five stitches, increase – repeat (14 stitches)

Rounds 42 – 48: sc in each stitch (14 stitches) (7 rounds)

Roll the shell up and sew it together.

 

Protective cover

Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6 stitches)

Round 2: increase around (12 stitches)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew the cover onto the shell.

 

Head

Round 1: 6 sc in a magic ring (6 stitches)

Round 2: increase in the first stitch, sc in the next stitch, increase in the next stitch, sc in the last stitch (9 stitches)

Rounds 3 – 4: sc in each stitch (9 stitches) (2 rounds)

Round 5: sc in the first stitch, decrease the next two stitches together, sc in the next stitch, decrease the last two stitches together (6 stitches)

Stuff the head

Round 6: decrease around until the hole closes, leave a long tail for sewing.

For the tentacles, attach the wool to the second round, chain 6, sc 5 back along the chain to the head, slip stitch into the next stitch – keep going around until you have 9 tentacles.

Embroider the eyes.

Sew the head into the shell.
