Graham the grasshopper

This pattern uses green, pink and blue 4 ply wool and a 2 mm hook. It is written in American crochet notation. The finished grasshopper is 8 cm long.

Head

With green 4 ply wool

Round 1: 6sc in a magic ring (6 stitches)

Round 2: increase in every stitch (12 stitches)

Round 3: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next stitch – repeat (18 stitches)

Round 4: sc in each stitch (18 stitches)

Round 5: sc in the first stitch, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (12 stitches)

Round 6: decrease around (6 stitches)

Stuff the head

 

Body

Round 7: increase in every stitch (12 stitches)

Round 8: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next stitch – repeat (18 stitches)

Rounds 9: (decrease two stitches together) x 6, increase in the next 6 stitches (18 stitches)

Rounds 10 – 17: sc in each stitch (18) (8 rounds)

Round 18: sc in the first stitch, decrease the next two stitches together, sc 2, decrease the next two stitches together, sc in the next 11 stitches (16 stitches)

Round 19: decrease the first two stitches together, sc in the next stitch, decrease the next two stitches together, sc in the next 11 stitches (14 stitches)

Round 20: (decrease two stitches together) x 2, sc in the next 10 stitches (12 stitches)

Stuff the body

Round 21: decrease around (6 stitches)

Round 22: decrease until the hole closes.

Fasten off, weave in end.

 

Hind legs (make two)

With green wool

Round 1: 4 sc in a magic ring (4 stitches)

Rounds 2 – 3: sc in each stitch (4 stitches) (2 rounds)

Round 4: increase in the first stitch, sc in the next stitch, decrease the last two stitches together (4 stitches)

Rounds 5 – 16: sc in each stitch (4 stitches) (12 rounds)

Round 17 – 18: increase in the first stitch, sc in the next stitch, decrease the last two stitches together (4 stitches) (2 rounds)

Round 19: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next stitch – repeat (6 stitches)

Rounds 20 – 24: sc in each stitch (6 stitches) (5 rounds)

Fasten off, leaving along tail for sewing.

 

Front legs (make 4)

Round 1: 4 sc in a magic ring (4 stitches)

Rounds 2 – 3: sc in each stitch (4 stitches) (2 rounds)

Round 4: increase in the first stitch, sc in the next stitch, decrease the last two stitches together (4 stitches)

Rounds 5 – 7: sc in each stitch (4 stitches) (3 rounds)

Antennae (make 2)

Attach green wool in an appropriate place and chain 3. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Round 3: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next stitch (9 stitches)

Rounds 4 – 12: sc in each stitch (9 stitches) (9 rounds)

Round 13: sc in the first stitch, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (6 stitches)

Round 14: sc in the first stitch, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (4 stitches)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

 

Assembly

Sew on the legs and wings and embroider the eyes.
